For The People’s Statement on the Bureau of Prisons Directive to Fully Implement First Step Act
July 1, 2025 — We commend Federal Bureau of Prisons Director, William Marshall, on his commitment to fully implementing the First Step Act – groundbreaking criminal justice legislation that passed the House and Senate with large bipartisan majorities and was signed into law by President Donald Trump.
Thousands of incarcerated people are still behind bars serving lengthy federal prison terms that are based on outdated laws which place exorbitant costs on taxpayers while offering no public safety benefits. A broad coalition across the political spectrum, including prosecutors, faith-based groups, civil rights advocates, and victims, recognizes that many of these people have paid their debts, are rehabilitated, and are worthy of a second chance.
We are grateful that Director Marshall and his team are committed to restoring integrity and fiscal responsibility to the federal prison system and enabling the agency to release more people who are ready to come home.
